Frequently Asked Questions
Sprinkler & Lawn Care
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I startup my sprinkler system?
Sometimes, the forecast predicts an unusually warm day in the Spring. However, in Colorado, we typically start turning on sprinkler systems on after the middle of April. The weather in Colorado is unpredictable and we've seen cold temperatures even in May. If you have turned on your water earlier than recommended, you can protect your system from freeze damage by wrapping the backflow preventor and outside faucet with an insulated cover.
When should I winterize my sprinkler system?
To be safe, we recommend scheduling your winterization(blowout) for early October. Because these services get scheduled weeks in advance, please make sure that you book your service as soon as possible.
What do I do if there is freezing temperatures and my system has not been winterized?
Always work with a professional but if you're out of options, you can do a few things to minimize damages:
- Shut off the water to the irrigation system inside the basement or crawlspace.
- Open up the two test ports in the vacuum breaker with a flat head screw driver.
- Take off the drain cap next to the shutoff valve and allow it to drain in a large cup or bucket.
- Wrap the backflow preventor and outside faucet with an insulated cover, towels or even a blanket.
What are best practices for lawn care?
You want your lawn to get air, nutrients, and water. We recommend aeration, fertilization applications throughout the season, and proper irrigation/water management with a smart Wi-Fi controller. Aeration reduces soil compaction, helps water and fertilizer to move into the root zone, and supplies your soil with air. Fertilization gives your sod the essential nutrients it needs, based on the type of sod, condition of the sod and time of year. A smart Wi-Fi controller can help you manage your water usage based on local weather and gives you access to your sprinkler system in the palm of your hand.
Why is there freeze damage to my sprinkler system after winterization?
A properly winterized sprinkler system should help minimize the risk of freeze damage. However, in some cases you can still run into freeze damage and costly repairs. Some issues that can cause damages to your sprinkler system after winterization are:
- Damages/defects in the sprinkler system before and after the winterization. Some examples of this included unrepaired backflow components, defective controllers, broken sprinklers heads, clogged drains and broken pipes.
- Faulty component in your sprinkler system that won't be discovered until Spring time. Specifically, a weeping shut off valve, which results in very slow drips of water after winterization.
- Accidentally turning on the water before the recommended time.
- No sprinkler blowout port in your sprinkler system.
How do the seasonal packages work?
Our packages include Spring Sprinkler System Startups, Winterizations (blowouts), and Lawn Care services. Package prices vary on the type of services needed, number of zones in your sprinkler system and the size of the lawn. These packages are prepaid and designed to establish a professional partnership for your sprinkler and lawn care needs. Choosing a package will give you access to priority scheduling and having all services for the season, scheduled in advance.
What happens if I cancel before my service(s) are performed?
We understand that unforeseen things can happen throughout the year. If you need to cancel the remaining services, we are more than happy to do so and provide a refund for any uncompleted services. The services provided will be charged at single service rates.
