Your sprinkler system should have a central manifold box that all zones lead back to, where the water is separated for each zone.
Over time, you may find that your manifold box gets damaged from lawnmowers or even roots infiltrating the box. Other times, your manifold box is too small to accommodate the expansion zones you want, so a larger box is required to handle the increased irrigation needs.
Solenoids may also need replacing when they either won't turn on or off the water to a specific zone, if they are damaged, and even older solenoids will need replacing as their useful life is at an end.

Valve solenoids in an irrigation system typically have a lifespan of between 7 and 15 years. If you are finding that your valve isn't always operating like it should, it doesn't necessarily mean that your solenoid is bad, but an inspection will reveal just what the problem is.
